Escape the Outbreak!: Interactive Infection Prevention Education for Healthcare Workers

Session Description: This session will outline how an Infection Prevention (IP) team at a large (1,200+ bed) acute care hospital coordinated and presented a week-long interactive Escape Room activity that engaged and educated healthcare workers (HCW). The Escape Room focused on Infection Prevention topics such as hand hygiene, proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) use, cleaning and disinfecting patient equipment, and utilizing a CLABSI (Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection) prevention bundle.

During Infection Prevention Week in 2023, the IP team had an area set up for HCW to come and play interactive games to “escape” from an outbreak by performing multiple activities at stations focused on different IP topics. After each activity, the HCW would scan a Quick-Response (QR) code and complete a short quiz to check their knowledge and be entered in a prize drawing.
The activity stations were developed by integrating key learning objectives with a range of learning styles to create an effective and engaging program. These stations were designed not only to impart critical knowledge but also to foster a collaborative and interactive environment. Through hands-on activities, participants actively engaged with the material, building practical skills and reinforcing their learning through tactile experiences. Visual elements were incorporated to enhance understanding, helping participants connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. Additionally, written components encouraged deeper exploration of important infection prevention concepts, allowing for thorough comprehension and application. This multifaceted approach was aimed at building strong relationships among participants and between participants and the material, ensuring a more impactful and cohesive learning experience.

The Escape Room activity was a fun and memorable learning opportunity that fostered a safe environment for questions and curiosity. The Infection Prevention team used this valuable time to connect with HCW on their terms, and this collaboration is the foundation for future partnerships in keeping patients safe.
