Susan was lead author of APIC’s 2010 and 2016 Position Papers on Safe Injection/Infusion Practices. She was Nurse Epidemiologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) from 1994-2021 and was active in APIC’s Mile High chapter, including as President. Susan was Chair of APIC’s Public Policy committee, an APIC Board member and our 2016 APIC President. She published numerous epidemiology/infection prevention articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented on topics such as anesthesia, safe injection, outbreaks, CLABSI, C. difficile, and neurosurgery/orthopedic SSIs. She is well remembered for spearheading the discovery of alcohol prep pads contaminated with Bacillus cereus resulting in an international recall and subsequently the FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs Award. Other awards include APIC’s Hero and President’s Distinguished Service Awards, SHEA’s Advanced Practice IP Award, Colorado’s Nightingale Luminary Award, and CHCOAwards: Children’s Choice, Family Center Care, Medical Staff Excellence in Quality and Patient Safety, Pillar Award, and Advance Nurse Practitioner Award.
