Borealpox at Almost 4.30 on a Friday, Muphy’s Law Is Real!

Session Description: This presentation will explore the challenges and necessary infection prevention and control measures when faced with emerging pathogens such as the Borealpox virus, previously known as Alaskapox. Highlighted by a recent case at 401 bed acute care facility, the session will focus on the experiences and actions taken by infection prevention upon suspecting and confirming a patient with Borealpox virus. The case study demonstrates the critical need for rapid response and effective communication with the health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Participants will gain insight into decision-making processes under pressure, such as implementing appropriate isolation precautions, contact tracing, and managing healthcare personnel exposure risks.
Emerging pathogens pose significant challenges to healthcare facilities due to their unknown characteristics and potential for widespread impact. Infection preventionists can be equipped to handle such threats using the 3 I’s: Identify, Isolate, and Inform through effective surveillance, swift action, and seamless communication. This presentation will emphasize best practices for handling cases of rare or emerging diseases, reinforcing the importance of preparedness and adherence of basic principles of infection prevention and control.
